MediRide EMS Provides Cardiac Training
(Marquette, MI) - Treating cardiac problems is one of the
most important jobs of Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) providers, and getting in-depth, hands on training
is critical to providing the finest in pre-hospital care for
heart-related emergencies.

The paramedics and staff at MediRide EMS recently
underwent an intense cardiac training session at
MediRide's Education Center in Marquette.  The class,
which featured a lecture followed by hands-on
demonstrations and dissection of pig hearts and lungs,
was taught by John Mullen,

EMT-P, I/C, from the Cath Lab at Marquette's Regional Medical Center.  "Mr. Mullen's presentation was
exceptional," said MediRide EMS CEO David Guizzetti.  "John has a unique ability to communicate a very
complicated and technical presentation in such a way that is easy to understand and we were very lucky to have
him come and put on this unbelievable training."

MediRide EMS opened up this training to all other EMS agencies in the county as well.  "We thought it was
important to sponsor this training and allow every EMS employee and volunteer the opportunity to benefit from
this very intense, in-depth training," said Guizzetti, "after all, it's our patients that will truly reap the benefits."

After viewing a power point presentation detailing general signs and symptoms of a cardiac emergency, those
who attended were split into groups and given various scenarios in which to practice their assessment and
treatment skills.  "The group practice sessions really helped me to be able to specifically focus on what I had
learned through the lecture and they helped me to apply that knowledge to real-life situations," said Tracy
Keskimaki, EMT-S.  Following the group practice sessions, the groups got the chance to dissect the hearts and
lungs of pigs in order to acquire a more intimate knowledge of the anatomy of the human heart and lung
function.  "The pig's heart is very similar to that of a human heart in both size and function," explained Mr. Mullen.

The training session lasted more than three hours and MediRide's paramedics and EMS crew appreciated the
chance to hone their knowledge and skills.  "We're lucky to have been able to put on such an excellent training
here at our training center.  Usually, this type of training is only held annually at the UP EMS Conference," said
Guizzetti, When Mr. Mullen approached us and asked if we'd like him to make the presentation to our staff, we
jumped at the chance."
